San Antonio

Here’s a list of our favorite places in San Antonio, so if you’re out that way check them out!

  • Taco Taco Cafe-
I have found that just about everywhere I go has at least one place that is the “quintessential” dining experience in that area. It’s not always a five-star, white tablecloth restaurant either. More often than not, it’s the out of the way shack, known only to the locals and famous for one particular dish.

Such is the case for Taco Taco Cafe’ in San Antonio. I remember asking a former Co-worker, who was a Texas transplant living in New Orleans, where I could get good Mexican food in Louisiana. He bluntly replied “you can’t.”. So when I started traveling to Texas for work, I made it a mission to find truly great Mexican food. Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, San Antonio… I have tried them all. Now understand what Jerry was talking about.

I discovered Taco Taco Cafe’ somewhat by accident. You know those terrible magazines you find in the seat pouches on airplanes? The ones next to the vomit bag and the “Sky Mall” catalog? I was flying to San Antonio, and it just so happened that there was a write up about Taco Taco Cafe’. The article was compelling enough, so I punched in the address on my rental car GPS and headed over for dinner. Located in a “questionable” neighborhood, in a very small building reminiscent of Mel’s Diner, I was begining to get a little skeptical. The parking lot was empty as well. Not a good sign. I pulled on the door and it was locked. Only then did I read the sign… open for breakfast and lunch.

More determined than ever to see what all the fuss was about, I returned early the next morning to see the same parking lot full to the brim and a line out the door! When I got inside, I just knew I was in for something special! The entire outfit consists of about 10 tables, and a few stools at a counter. I took the first one that came available. Everything is cooked fresh right there in front of you, including the tortillas made from scratch by an older Mexican lady. You will never want a processed Tortilla again! The breakfast Taco wrapped in that fresh flour tortilla was amazing! With a wide range of fillings, you can go as mild or exotic as you dare, but it’s truly the freshness of the ingredients and that homemade tortilla that sets Taco Taco Cafe’ apart.

I thought I had found a hidden gem, but the secret is apparently out! Taco Taco Cafe’s offerings, especially that breakfast Taco, have been voted Best by Details Magazine, Bon Appetite, the Food Network, etc…

“If a breakfast taco is that good,” I wondered, “I’ll bet lunch is amazing!” So a few hours later, I was back and not disappointed! I had a Carne Asado Taco that was far and away one of the best things I have ever eaten. Tender Steak, grilled onions, fresh avocado slices, and those amazing tortillas. I had 3 and my bill was around $8.00! I would have happily paid much, much more!

The next time you find yourself in ole’ San Anton’, pull yourself away from the Riverwalk for breakfast or lunch and treat yourself to the World’s Greatest Taco!

Mais, I wish I’d found your blog before my last trip to N’Awlinz. But cher, you, and Bon Appetit, both been buffaloed by that article on Taco Taco. There’s way better tacos all over San Antonio. Next time you come you let me know, I’ll take you someplace better.
