Houston Restaurants

We’re putting together a list of all our favorite restaurants in Houston, led by some Cajun Foodies in exile. If you have any places to contribute let us know!

  • Beck’s Prime
Disguised as a fast food joint, but so much more, Beck’s doesn’t attract customers so much as it creates addicts.

I approach my visit thus: Order a triple-thick vanilla malt. Other menu items make excellent side dishes.

As expected, you’ll find Mesquite flamed burgers, steaks, etc. Have those, but don’t hesitate to think out of the grease-kissed brown bag:

    Ahi Tuna Sandwich
Ginger Wasabi Spread, Feta, Cucumber, Red Onion, Tomato 8.95

    Captain Butter

  • Brenner’s Steakhouse
Unlike TX’s ubiquitous strip mall dining, Brenner’s sits alone, discreetly positioned to welcome old-school locals and the fortunate newcomers who stumble in.

The staff took exceptionally good care of we displaced New Orleanians with no reservations. Even before apps arrived, the wine steward introduced us to our now favorite Alsacian Pinot Blanc.

Start with crab cakes, lobster bisque, The salad, then enjoy the filet with bernaise or port demiglace. Note: there were no leftovers of the au gratin potatoes.

    We’ll be back.

  • Chuy’s-
There is nothing quite like a Chuychanga with the Green Chile sauce and a dose of queso on top.  The margaritas have a bit of a punch to them, which lend to everything tasting better.  You have to watch the timing at Chuy’s though, as the wait on a table can get out of hand, especially on the weekend.

  • El Tiempo Cantina-
Their mixed grilled fajitas are fabulous, the standouts being the beef, quail, and sausage. Additionally, their ceviche is one of the best in town. Great portions and high quality combined with some potent margaritas equals a great time.

  • Erawan- Authentic Thai Cuisine
I usually visit Erawan in the evening. Obviously this establishment is a popular spot for lunch as it is usually fairly empty in the evenings. With a location near the Galleria the lunch crowd is much more atmospheric if you are into that sort of thing.

My order of pad thai is usually accompanied by one of these three dishes: Thai Sweet Basil, Pad Prik King or Panang. These three dishes as well as Pad Thai can be accompanied by chicken, pork, beef or shrimp. It is our choice. I usually get the Pork Pad Thai and chicken in the other dish. The meal begins with a pot of Thom Ka Gai soup. This unique Thai specialty is chicken and mushrooms in a coconut milk broth. As with any dish I usually request the soup spicy.

On occasion I have ventured away from these 4 mainstays and have never been disappointed.

  • Lupe Tortilla-
With seven locations in Houston, Lupe Tortilla is one of the better known Mexican restaurants in Houston. With all of the various Mexican or Tex Mex restaurants in the are, it is often difficult for a visitor to the city to decide which one to choose. Because of it’s location the city offers many great Mexican restaurants, but Lupe would qualify as my favorite.

The menu is not huge, so if you are the type who is interested in a combination type of dinner, this may not be the place for you. The menu is limited, but there are a few combination dinners. However, Lupe has without a doubt the best carne asada I have ever eaten. For those of you not familiar with carne asada it is simply a grilled fajita steak served whole with a side of beans and rice. Lupe marinates their steaks in some sort of lime pepper concoction which adds tremendous flavor to this dish. There are three variations of the carne asada: Carne Asada, Steak Lupe (carne asada topped with tomatoes, onions, cilantro and peppers, and the Three Pepper Cheese Steak (carne asada topped with sliced habanero, serrano and jalapeno peppers and melted monterey jack cheese). I always get the Three Pepper Cheese Steak, but it is not for the faint of heart. That sucker is SPICY. They also serve chicken (or cheekin, as they state on the menu) variations with the same toppings. Obviously the fajitas are just as delicious as they use the same marinade.

    Oh, and the margaritas rock!

  • Goode Company Barbecue-
The beauty in Goode’s is arguably not even in the meat, but in the jalapeno cheese bread. Take a slice and stick either a slab of their excellent brisket or sausage in there with a spot of sauce, a slice of onion and a pickle and you have yourself a killer foldover!

  • Pesce
The Thai style fried flounder is amazing as is the simply grilled fish.  Top notch service to boot!

Was just talking with my wife the other day about visiting Houston. My wife is from Texas and I have always thought the city looked amazing when I have seen it in movies and television. Now you have given me another great reason to visit.

As a huge fan of Mexican food I think I will have to try the Three Pepper Cheese Steak at Lupe Tortilla.
