Poll: Best burger and/or cheeseburger in Louisiana?

It’s time to crank up another “best of” poll and as I sit here and write this, all I have on my mind is a big, juicy cheeseburger.

It’s one of those moments where you are daydreaming like Wimpy from Popeye with thoughts of greasy beef patties covered with a mound of grated cheddar and smushed between two hot out of the oven fresh buns only to wake up and find drool on your keyboard…

No? You don’t have those moments? Ah well, more burgers for me then.

To those of you who do daydream in smell o’ vision though, who has the best burger and/or cheeseburger in Louisiana?

Usual rules apply, if you don’t see your top choice, comment on the post and I will add them in!

The Cajun Foodie 100: Pralines

I figure it’s time to kick off a column of sorts, so I’m going to start a running list of the top 100 food experiences and items in the state. Each post I’ll tack on a new one and give you my reasons for its inclusion on the list. Who knows, this may end up being The Cajun Foodie 1000 by the time I’m done.

The items are not listed in any specific order or ranking, chances are they are going to be written up in a totally random manner or when I just have the envie for something. Without further ado, let’s get this party started…

  1. Pralines-Pralines are a staple of Louisiana get togethers, gift baskets, and tailgating parties. A confectionery based on sugar and pecans, they come in all different kinds. From the crumbly crystallized texture to the creamy and smooth, the praline hits the plate in many different forms. We’ve got two excellent recipes to make them at home, you can hit up Southern Candymakers in New Orleans for their excellent version, or order some of Aunt Sally’s creamy pralines.

Feeling a lil’ Cajun Pride

I know this post is a bit out of the ordinary for The Cajun Foodie, but it is something I felt compelled to share and write about.

The Wife and I attended the Acadiana Business Awards dinner two nights ago in Lafayette, and found ourselves sitting in the presence of some of the greats of the South Louisiana business world.  One by one, they walked up to the podium to accept their awards and deliver some of the absolute best acceptance speeches I’ve ever heard.

There really is nothing like hearing successful entrepreneurs talk about the beginning of their business and the bumpy road to where they are now.  Excitement, exuberance, and sheer passion for life is exhibited by those that assume the risk and take the proverbial leap.

What really struck me however was the pride and joy expressed by the honorees in family, community, and South Louisiana as a whole and, as luck would have it, many of the recipients were also in the food business.

Festival report: French Quarter Festival in New Orleans

screen shot 300x225 Festival report: French Quarter Festival in New OrleansWe went to the French Quarter Festival the other weekend and had a fabulous time! The slightly overcast weather and nice breeze kept the temperatures cool and brought out the people as the Quarter was fully alive over the weekend.

This festival is quickly becoming one of my favorites in Louisiana.  With great food and music, it is well organized and spread out enough to allow people to move around while still being able to get to all the different areas with ease!

We met up with some friends and family, which is a very good thing, because with all the great food I intended to try, and I needed some help to get around to it all. Here’s where we hit though:
