Tucked in a small corner underneath the Mississippi River bridge, the Pastime Restaurant and Lounge has served up great food for years. There are several methods by which you could tell you were in the Pastime even in your eyes were closed:

1. you have to write your order on little pieces of paper waiting on the counter,
2. you get your food when your name is called loudly but barely intelligibly over a PA system,
3. you move the plate on which your roast beef poboy sits and you feel the trail otherwise known as “the smear.”

The “Double Bypass” at Morel’s

 The Double Bypass at Morels

Oftentimes, drinking a fine red wine leaves little room for anything but enjoying the moment…that is, until many moments later you are feeling the effects of said wine.  Such times call for one kind of food and you know what I’m talking about, the kind like the concoction my friend affectionately calls “The Double Bypass.”

In search of the ultimate roast beef po-boy….

In search of the ultimate roast beef po boy....

I finally made it to Parasol’s Restaurant & Bar.  From the outside of this Irish Channel establishment, one would think dive bar.  That assumption is confirmed as you enter the place.  The bar is small, dark, smokey, and dingy in a good way.  Parasol’s is widely known for its St. Patty’s day celebration and what a party they put on.

Sometimes lost in the whole deal is the back kitchen serving up some killer food.  The kitchen crew serves up a variety of po-boys and traditional sides such as fries, wings, onion rings, etc.  But what most people come here for is there roast beef po-boy.  They claim to have the city’s best po-boy.  That is a statement used by many who serve the famous sandwiches but few can actually deliver on that.  All of their po-boys may not be the best but the roast beef is indeed the best one that I have eaten in a city full of wannabes.

Paul’s Pirogue

 Pauls Pirogue Pauls Pirogue

This is first of many posts that I will probably regret, but hey, Forrest forgot to say how disappointing some of the selections are when he said life was like a box of chocolates. I’m that man that eats the chocolate covered orange brandy nougat things without spitting them out, and still wants to talk about them.

I’ve been scoping out Paul’s Pirogue in Carencro for some time now. I’m a big fan of places that look like converted old time grocery stores (please stay open forever Roberto’s!) and when I first stumbled across the Paul’s Pirogue website I was pumped. The articles on the site (circa 2001) from the Times of Acadiana and Southern Living magazines spoke of piles of lump crabmeat at ridiculously cheap prices amongst other delectable items. On top of that, they promoted and sold their own homemade mayo, which makes you a winner in my book. As we pulled up, my salivary glands were pumping. Old time grocery store facade, nice lights, hand painted signs touting their food…oh yeah.
