The Classy Cajun in Houma

What Houma’s newest eatery lacks in size, it makes up for in big Cajun flavor…

Just south of the Houma Airbase on banks of Bayou Terrebonne, Olden and Nancy Rodrigue have turned a remodeled C-store into a mecca for delicious seafood.

The Classy Cajun is serving up all of the traditional South Louisiana favorites, including golden fried seafood and seasonal boiled offerings.

Lunch or dinner in the cozy dining room at the Classy Cajun has the feel of a laid back family gathering. They say there are three keys to a successful restaurant: Location, Location, Location. The Classy Cajun is conveniently on the way to Cocodrie, and those generous portions of fried and boiled seafood will satisfy many a sportsman and woman on their way for a weekend at the camp. Their incredible Po-boys and thinly sliced, crispy onion rings should make for an enticing treat for the hungry fishermen on their way home from a morning of catching speckled trout and redfish.

I’m of the opinion that every really good restaurant has to have a niche to stand out; something they do better or differently than anybody else. Drago’s has those charbroiled oysters, at Pascal’s, it’s the BBQ Shrimp. At the Classy Cajun, there are at least two that will soon be it’s calling cards.

First, the roast beef po-boy is out of this world. Mrs. Nancy’s tried and true homemade recipe of fresh cooked pot roast smothered in a rich gravy goes perfectly on a lightly toasted, po-boy bun.

Their second “specialty” has got to be a really unique dessert that combines the best of two Cajun favorites… Pecan Pie Bread Pudding. Imagine (or better yet, go taste for yourself) a classic Cajun bread pudding with all it’s cream, vanilla, and cinnamon, topped with the very best part of a pecan pie… that caramelized, crunchy topping. No rum sauce needed here. It’s fantastic just the way it is.

Though crawfish season is just about over, I was lucky enough to sample a few recently, and they were excellent! Ever notice how most boiled crawfish you get in a restaurant taste a little different from ones boiled at home? Well the Classy Cajun managed to bring a little bit of home to the restaurant. Mr. Olden tells me the secret is that he doesn’t use a commercial premix that a lot of restaurants use, but stuck to the homemade style that he has been perfecting for a lifetime. I can’t wait for next spring to enjoy an order or two! In the meantime, I’ll have to “settle” for the delectable crabs and shrimp they’ll be serving up this summer and fall.

Whether you’re in the mood for a po-boy on the go, a weekday plate lunch like momma used to make, or ready to enjoy a superb seafood dinner with friends or family in a casual atmosphere, make the short drive over to the Classy Cajun. You won’t be disappointed!

Olde Tyme Grocery po boys in Lafayette

shrimp 150x150 Olde Tyme Grocery po boys in LafayetteWe recently ordered a couple po boys from Olde Tyme Grocery in Lafayette, an institution in the “Saint’s street” area of town.  Well loved by locals and passers through alike, Olde Tyme is currently ranked number two in our poll for the fried shrimp po boy and the Olde Tyme Special (“OTS”) also deserves being up at the top of anyone’s list in its own right.

Luckily, the Wife (and much of the rest of my family) is amenable to planning out who is going to get what to make sure that we get a little taste of as many dishes as possible, so despite the fact that we both wanted the shrimp po boy, we decided to get one shrimp and one OTS.

The fried shrimp po boy is comprised of a pile of golden fried shrimp, a couple slices of ripe tomato, mayo and lettuce.ots 150x150 Olde Tyme Grocery po boys in Lafayette Stuffed into fresh Langlinais bread with a pillowy interior and crackly crust, this po boy truly could be the definitive example of what this sandwich should be.

The OTS is similar to the “special” that can be found at many other shops (ham, roast beef, turkey and cheese) with Olde Tyme using Swiss as the standard.  Their version stands above many others in that each of the meats is delicious and flavorful in zapps sweet potato 150x150 Olde Tyme Grocery po boys in Lafayettetheir own right and do not seem stuck into the sandwich just to provide a little extra protein.  Indeed, this po boy generally comes with nearly a pound of meat on each foot of delicious goodness.

Coupled with a bag of Zapp’s absolutely outstanding Sweet Potato chips or an order of Olde Tyme’s amazing fries and a couple of ice cold Cokes, this is truly the meal that Cajun daydreams are made of.

1921 Seafood in Houma

1921 150x150 1921 Seafood in HoumaOn a recent excursion to the grandest of all islands (Grand Isle to those of you not familiar with this nickname for the seven miles of fun and sun), the Wife and I were feeling a bit hungry.  My initial plans were to make it down to Harry’s or D&D in Larose but the Wife was having none of it and we were eating sooner rather than later in our trip, so it was clear that a pitstop was going to be made in Houma.

I put 1921 Seafood on the trusty iPhone GPS and minutes later we were outside of what they would proudly call a shack on Barrow Street.  This place is the real deal, with the bathrooms being labeled simply as “Inboards” and “Outboards” and a hand-washing station with commercial soap tacked up on a wall.

Festival report: French Quarter Festival in New Orleans

screen shot 300x225 Festival report: French Quarter Festival in New OrleansWe went to the French Quarter Festival the other weekend and had a fabulous time! The slightly overcast weather and nice breeze kept the temperatures cool and brought out the people as the Quarter was fully alive over the weekend.

This festival is quickly becoming one of my favorites in Louisiana.  With great food and music, it is well organized and spread out enough to allow people to move around while still being able to get to all the different areas with ease!

We met up with some friends and family, which is a very good thing, because with all the great food I intended to try, and I needed some help to get around to it all. Here’s where we hit though:

Festival report: Louisiana Roadfood Festival in New Orleans

arnauds 225x300 Festival report: Louisiana Roadfood Festival in New Orleans We went to the first ever Louisiana Roadfood Festival in New Orleans and had a good time meeting people, talking about all the great food at the festival and throughout Louisiana, and tasting everything we could get our hands on.

The Quarter was buzzing with foodies from all over the United States, hungry locals, and even the occasional (okay, more than occasional due to a convention being in town) pirate and his wench.

Darrell’s in Lake Charles

Every time I pass through (and even a few times when I was just near) Lake Charles I try to stop by Darrell’s, home of the Darrell’s Special.  Calling the Darrell’s Special just a po-boy would be like calling the Grand Canyon just a drainage ditch.

The specifics seem simple enough: po-boy bread with ham, turkey, roast beef, gravy, cheddar, Swiss & provolone cheeses, mustard, lettuce, and jalapeno mayo. Nothing to write home about, right? WRONG!!!

Perhaps the greatest BBQ Beef Po boy the world has ever known.

roast beef1 150x150 Perhaps the greatest BBQ Beef Po boy the world has ever known.I wanted to make sure I picked a title that didn’t over hype how I feel about this sandwich… I think I nailed it. Tucked along Bayou Lafourche in Raceland, about a half mile or so away from Hwy 90 on LA 1, sits my favorite little hole in the wall, The Goal Post. Since I was a little boy, I have enjoyed the simple pleasures of (in my opinion) the finest BBQ Roast Beef Po-Boy you will find anywhere. Better than any Roast Beef Po-boy I’ve eaten in New Orleans or anywhere else for that matter. I know I’m biased. Basically, the formula and BBQ sauce have remained the same for as long as I can remember: a flat piece of French bread loaded with shaved beef smothered in a terrific BBQ sauce and I always get it dressed with lettuce, tomato and mayo. The Real Deal: Bayou Delight Restaurant in Houma

O.K Foodies, if you’re looking for authentic Cajun cuisine, you won’t find better than at Bayou Delight Restaurant in Houma, LA ( really “off the beaten path” in Houma). It’s located on what locals call Bayou Black Hwy., which is actually La. Hwy. 90.  The first time I ventured out to find it I got lost, but boy am I glad that I persisted in my quest for “real” cajun delights.  Many restaurants boast authentic Cajun specialties, but you’ll know the first time you feast at Bayou Delight, that you’ve found the bona fide stuff.

Gourmet poboys at Ye Olde College Inn

jimmy and the poboy 150x150 Gourmet poboys at Ye Olde College Inn

Jimmy and the giant poboy

We were in New Orleans on Saturday night and dropped in at Ye Olde College Inn on South Carrollton. We had to wait about 15 minutes for a table and was it worth it!!! This place has been open since 1933 or somewhere in there and I had not eaten here since my college days 30 years ago, but I think that has been a mistake.

Definitely the best poboy I have ever had!!!! We opted for onion rings for the table and the Abita Beer on tap. Great onion rings but the poboys were amazing. One foot long on Leidenheimer French Bread (the best French bread in Louisiana in my opinion) and they were gourmet like the menu claimed. I ordered the Fried Green tomato and Shrimp Remoulade and others at the table had the Fried Oyster with Havarti Cheese and Bacon. The waiter, Jimmy, recommended they come dressed so that’s how we got them. These were HUGE!!! No one could finish and we blamed it on the onion rings.

Danny & Clyde’s – Cheap Gas, News on Wheels, Elmer’s Chee-Weez and Shrimp Po Boys

When I woke up yesterday in the French Quarter (without having to browse late-night text messages), I immediately remembered seeing the Michael Phelps of mexi-mullets last night at BBC and knew that my day was destined for something good. I wasn’t sure why I’d have a good day, but I knew it would involve TV, A/C, relaxing and good food. After getting back to the real world and making time for my usual Sunday visit to Rouse’s on Clearview (my condolences to their family), I remembered another local classic – Danny & Clyde’s. That’s right – a convenience store.
