Who dat say they have the best boudin?

Okay, I’m getting really excited about this upcoming boudin cookoff that will be held October 17 in Lafayette. Approximately 20 teams/boudin shops have entered and yours truly will be one of the judges getting the pleasure of downing this delicacy in the name of finding the best of the best.

Until then, I’m interested in seeing what y’all think is the best boudin out there, so vote away!

Usual rules apply, if you don’t see your top choice, comment on the post and I will add them in!

Bergeron’s in Port Allen for smoked meats and pulled pork!

Bergerons in Port Allen for smoked meats and pulled pork!Bergeron’s Boudin and Cajun Meats in Port Allen is just across the Mississippi River from downtown Baton Rouge and LSU. What was once a little shack along Hwy. 415 now is a little shack with a big dining hall next to it, but I wouldn’t know what the inside of the new building looks like as the original shack has everything I need and more. Smoked sausages, boudin and freshly fried tasty treats like boudin balls and meat pies await you inside, and if you’re lucky, they might just have a stack of their aluminum foil wrapped pulled pork sandwiches sitting on the counter beckoning to you. Billy Rays: Part Two

 Billy Rays: Part Two

Alright, if you remember my last post about Billy Ray’s in Opelousas, you might remember that I said the story behind the place was a bit confusing.  Well, it gets even more confusing.  Billy’s in Krotz Springs, Louisiana looks like your average everyday gas station. However, they are linked to Billy Ray’s in that they supposedly serve the same Billy’s recipe boudin, as well as the same boudin balls.  I say supposedly because even the ladies that work here can’t agree on what recipe is used where anymore.

Surrey’s is a breakfast must in New Orleans!!!!

Simply put, Surrey’s Cafe & Juice Bar is the place to go in NOLA for a wicked breakfast.  The place is nestled along the the tree lined Magazine Street in the Lower Garden District.  If you are not familiar with the area, you may have a tough time finding it at first but your patience will be greatly rewarded.   While Surrey’s also serves up some tasty lunch items, it is the breakfast that keeps people coming back.  Once seated, feel free to order a glass or two of your favorite fresh squeezed fruit juice: OJ, carrot, celery, beet, apple, grapefruit and lemonade.  If you are a fan of OJ, I suggest ordering a carafe because one glass of Surrey’s OJ won’t be enough and while the waiter may look at you a little funny because you are ordering a carafe for yourself, it’s worth it.

Boudin Balls at Billy Ray’s

So there is this place in Opelousas on E. Vine St. People call it Billy’s, Ray’s, Billy Ray’s, or Billy and Ray’s. Whatever it is, they have the best boudin balls EVER. See, a lot of places in south Louisiana have boudin balls. Rice and basically dressing mix tossed together, packed in a ball deep fried. Billy Ray’s (as I call it) has them all beat due to one simple thing. Their batter.

They double dip their boudin balls in a mixture that can only be compared to the batter on Popeye’s fried chicken. Gnarly, crispy, crunchy goodness with a soft inside.

Now, as for the boudin, be careful. The place has such a complicated name because they sell two different boudins. Not just one spicy and one mild, but two different recipes. You see, they sell Billy’s (the spicier one) and Ray’s (the milder of the two). It is easy to be confused by which one is which because they have a big sign inside that says “Ray’s hot boudin,” but don’t be mislead. If you want spicy, the easy thing is to just ask for the spicy and they know what you’re talking about.

In fact, I think it is a mistake to order anything but the “spicy.” Ray’s boudin is bland to me, bordering on tasteless. Billy’s, the spicier one, is great, and is the stuffing for their boudin balls also. I’ve messed up before, ordering Ray’s boudin because of the sign saying it was the hot one, and I have ordered Billy’s and been given Ray’s. Now, I just say “spicy.”

To further ease the confusion though, just get yourself a boudin ball. Also, they have also have another location in Krotz Springs on 190.
