Sweet Baby Breesus at the French Press in Lafayette

French Press 1 300x295 Sweet Baby Breesus at the French Press in LafayetteNot long ago I alluded to the fact that the French Press in Lafayette does a dish with boudin and Steen’s cane syrup.  Rumor was the dish was named Breesus something or other…

Low and behold, the Wife and I went to the French Press the other day for Sunday brunch and there it was on the menu- the Sweet Baby Breesus.  The dish sounded even more delectable than I had thought it would be; three buttermilk biscuit sliders with Bacon, Fried Boudin Balls and Steen’s Cane Syrup.  The recommendations for pairing boudin and cane syrup was made the other day by one of our commenters, and the French Press ups the ante by using boudin balls, adding bacon and snuggling it in little buttermilk biscuits.

The result itself certainly did not disappoint: warm biscuits with the perfect amount of crumble, good boudin to bacon ratio, and a side of crispy-edged Breakfast Potatoes to boot.  What could have made this dish better? Nothing.  And for me that is a rare feat…

Aside on the French Press itself: Quickly becoming one of our go to brunch spots, the French Press presents three very different menus depending on the time of day.  With traditional breakfast/brunch and nice spins on great sandwiches all at reasonable prices during the daytime, at night the restaurant changes the menu often if not nightly sourcing only local and fresh ingredients.  With a chef that has Stella on his resume, the French Press is a fast riser in the LAF food scene and a great addition to downtown.

An ode to bacon…

cane 150x150 An ode to bacon...Inspired by the bacon episode of one of my favorite new shows, The Best Thing I Ever Ate, the Wife and I got to talking:  Is there anything in this world that bacon does not make better?  Is there anyone out there that has actually said to themselves, “man, this really should not have bacon on/in it?”  How do you answer someone when they ask what was the best you ever ate containing bacon? praline bacon 150x150 An ode to bacon...

Whether you’re talking about making an already monstrous Cuban that much more porkalicious, topping off the chicken finger on Texas toast with secret sauce sandwich that helps to turn the freshman 15 into the freshman 20 due to its addictiveness, or simply laying on plate crusted with a sugary glaze CC 002 150x150 An ode to bacon...making life just a little bit more enjoyable, bacon is the be-all end-all of culinary goodness.

So seriously, what’s the best thing you ever ate with bacon on it or in it?  And if one of you actually found a dish that bacon actually brought down a notch, go ahead and comment, but I’m plugging my ears after wiping the bacon grease off my fingers.

And you thought your po boy was overstuffed…

CC 002 300x225 And you thought your po boy was overstuffed... A friend of mine from law school suggested that I get myself to Crawfish Corner in Opelousas for one of their Cuban sandwiches (I know, you’re thinking there is no WAY that thing to the left is a Cuban) so I finally mustered up the courage and the room in my belly for their “Decadent Cuban.”

Let me tell you, I was forewarned, but it still did not fully prepare me for this beast. Roasted stuffed pork, smoked ham, bacon, Swiss cheese, mustard, and FRIED dill pickles.

When I finally stopped laughing at the ridiculousness of the po boy and got down to eating it, I only made it halfway through before calling it quits. What a glorious half it was though!

By the way, my diet started today…again.

A suggestion for the guy and his dog that sell chicken fingers

If you’ve been following us for a while (i.e. all two months of our existence), you know that we’ve already unveiled what we think is “the secret” to Cane’s sauce.   It’s been a while since I’ve had the guilty pleasure of eating at one of these fine establishments, but on a late night excursion some time ago, a friend of mine “dragged” the Wife and I through the drive-thru.

A couple of minutes later, we had arrived back at his place where we also came across some bacon (his fiancee is renowned for her skill cooking the swinish slices).   It was a no brainer… seconds later I had what was one of the most divine late night delicacies I have ever come across.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so maybe this picture will pop back into your brain when you wake up this weekend after a long day of having a bit too much fun at Jazzfest or Festival International.

In the meanwhile I hope Mr. Graves and his crew take a long hard look at this photo and realize it IS (or in my view should be) the next big thing.

Let the drooling begin…

Seriously, if was going to an LSU game one day and the sign at the College Drive location said “Get a Cajun Foodie TODAY!” promoting this combination, I just might have re-enroll at LSU for another degree.  Hello post-doctorate student 15!

Elizabeth’s Restaurant in the Bywater area of New Orleans

img 0140 225x300 Elizabeths Restaurant in the Bywater area of New OrleansElizabeth’s Restaurant is a funky little shack in the Bywater area of New Orleans serving up some great food and a lot of taglines. Walking up to the front door, you’re greeted with one of them; “Eat here or we both go hungry” is drawn on the side of the building luring people in. If the art doesn’t get you though, maybe their menus will, starting with what is arguably one of the most talked-about appetizers these days – praline bacon!
