O.K Foodies, if you’re looking for authentic Cajun cuisine, you won’t find better than at Bayou Delight Restaurant in Houma, LA ( really “off the beaten path” in Houma). It’s located on what locals call Bayou Black Hwy., which is actually La. Hwy. 90. The first time I ventured out to find it I got lost, but boy am I glad that I persisted in my quest for “real” cajun delights. Many restaurants boast authentic Cajun specialties, but you’ll know the first time you feast at Bayou Delight, that you’ve found the bona fide stuff.
This restaurant has been around for 29 years and most people in the Houma area seem to know the owners (affectionately known as Mr. Lonnie and Miss Marie), the cooks and the waitresses all by first name. Most people also have the menu memorized and know exactly what they will order before they walk through the door. That’s because once you’ve tried their daily specials, you just seem to have an envie for exactly what Bayou Delight is serving on that day!
Umm…that reminds me…today is Thursday, and my mouth is watering for their “Thursday Special”- amazingly creamy white beans, thin and crispy fried fish, and bread pudding straight from Heaven. Trust me on this one. I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of bread puddings (simply because I try them as often as I can, in as many restaurants as I can) and I believe Bayou Delight’s delectable pudding to be better than Commander’s Palace famous bread pudding (that’s baked on the spot, as you order it!).
In addition to the daily specials, the menu is also known for terrific po-boys. The bread is always fresh and crispy and the po-boy over-stuffed. The fried seafood (shrimp, fish or oyster) po-boys are my personal favorites, but Bayou D is known for its roast beef po-boys, so most patrons order up the legendary beef and gravy “soaked” variety. If you like your po-boys juicy (the kind you almost have to eat with a fork), you’ll love these!
I would highly recommend their gumbo also (every kind on the menu). You won’t be disappointed. Really, don’t take the ride “out there” and not try the gumbo.
If you Google “Bayou Delight Restaurant” and read the reviews, you will get the gist of the love and loyalty Cajun critics have for this place. I won’t do all that explaining…I’m in a hurry…remember it’s Thursday, and my white beans, fried fish and bread pudding from heaven are waiting! I will add, however, that the stuffed (to the max) crabs are great too (nothing but tons of fresh crab meat, and just enough seasonings).
If the delicious menu isn’t enough to lure you in, there is Cajun music and dancing on the weekends, and did I mention that Alligator Annie’s Swamp and Alligator tours depart directly from the boat launch behind the restaurant??? Dining can be indoors, or out on the bayou side patio/porch (you know, where the swamp tours depart). Lucky diners who choose to eat on the patio often get a glimpse of an alligator!
All and all, Bayou Delight is a great Cajun experience, as well as, a great food experience. Gotta go now…it’s Thursday…white beans, fried fish, bread pudding are calling!

AGREED!!! After eating there, I was astounded that I had never heard of the place until I started working in Houma. I also had a bout with being “directionally challenged” the first time I drove there, so please beware that it is easy to miss! I have never experienced the lunch specials, but have received excellent service on busy Friday nights when the place is packed due to the music and dancing. So happy to see that you recommended the stuffed crabs…my personal favorite. Mama Mia, I may have to meet you there for lunch next week!

Beej,
So glad you enjoyed Bayou Delight,(happy you mastered the driving directions too). That can be challenging!
Service is usually great, even on “Cajun two-step Friday nights”. What an experience that is!

Amen on the fried chicken. It’s FANTASTIC. Add a side of onion rings and you can’t beat it. I grew up 3 miles down the road from Bayou D and have eaten there since the doors opened. I even have family that work there. I have yet to find better chicken anywhere in Houma or Thibodaux. I’ll be heading down there in a couple of hours to get my fix.

After dining at Bayou Delight Restaurant Cajun and Creole Cuisine my husband told me on the lovely ride back to Thibodaux, “I have found my favorite place to eat!”
The Seafood Platter was cooked to perfection and my Roast Beef Poboy and Seafood Gumbo was awesome!
