We were in New Orleans on Saturday night and dropped in at Ye Olde College Inn on South Carrollton. We had to wait about 15 minutes for a table and was it worth it!!! This place has been open since 1933 or somewhere in there and I had not eaten here since my college days 30 years ago, but I think that has been a mistake.
Definitely the best poboy I have ever had!!!! We opted for onion rings for the table and the Abita Beer on tap. Great onion rings but the poboys were amazing. One foot long on Leidenheimer French Bread (the best French bread in Louisiana in my opinion) and they were gourmet like the menu claimed. I ordered the Fried Green tomato and Shrimp Remoulade and others at the table had the Fried Oyster with Havarti Cheese and Bacon. The waiter, Jimmy, recommended they come dressed so that’s how we got them. These were HUGE!!! No one could finish and we blamed it on the onion rings.
- Jimmy and the giant poboy
- The fried oyster and Havarti
- The fried green tomato and shrimp remoulade poboy
The hamburgers looked to die for and the chicken fried steak was hanging off the plate it was so big. The atmosphere was casual and fun and Jimmy provided service with a smile. He tried to talk us into the award winning fried Bread Pudding with rum sauce for dessert but we promised we would return at another time and have the dessert with a mug of coffee and no foot long sandwich. Ye Olde College Inn is a great place to bring friends from out of town that need to experience a terrific New Orleans Po Boy.
The owner also owns Mid City Rock N Bowl and the plan is for the Rock N Bowl to relocate right next to the Inn on Carrollton. That should make for some good eating, fun bowling and dancing the night away!

I have to agree with Martee that if you are looking to stray away from your typical poboy – Ye Old College Inn is the place to go. I also opted for the fried green tomato and shrimp poboy (also an award winner at the New Orleans poboy festival) and it was fantastic. I did get suckered into trying to award winning fried bread pudding and let’s just say — it totally deserves any and every award you could give such a wonderful treat !!!!!

Martee – I totally agree 100% on this one. Anyone eating at the Inn must also try the Oyster/Blue Cheese appetizer – golden fried oysters w/ blue cheese crumbles over a bed of lettuce and drizzled with blue cheese infused olive oil…fabulous! My mouth is watering thinking about this place.

Read this post the first time I ever viewed this website, and it brightened my day. My family started the Ye Olde College Inn and sold it to the current owners before Katrina. Great to hear the food is still amazing!

Looking forward to experience New Orleans Po Boy. Thanks for sharing this post. I discovered another great restaurant today that could offer great ambiance and dishes. I am so excited to try their specialties. Hope that there will be a Po Boy branch here in our place. I can also refer this to my friends who are in the field of advertising.
