Parrot’s on False River is a Parrothead’s dream. Dark neighborhood bar with great tunes routinely interspersed with Jimmy Buffett songs, Hawaiian shirts, knick knacks pegged everywhere, friendly people, overlooking the water, great burgers, fresh cut fries and chips… I could go on and on.
Bought seven years ago by the one of the nicest couples you’ll ever meet, Parrot’s in Jarreau is a short distance from Baton Rouge on the southeast side of False River. You can drive there of course, but the best way is to pull up in a boat and tie off at their dock.
The place is one of the best around for drinks amongst old friends, new friends, and people that you’ve never met before but are soon to be counted as friends. While I had been there before, I had never had the chance to eat here. On a recent trip though, the Wife and I accompanied a friend out to False River and I was determined to eat one of these famous burgers.
We saddled up to the bar and quickly picked out a couple items to share: fresh cut fries, fresh ripple cut potato chips and an order of fried okra.
As you well know, I’m a big fan of home cut fries and these certainly did not disappoint. I think the chips somehow upstaged them though.
These are not the Zapp’s-like masterpieces similar to those covered with blue cheese at Bistro Byronz. They are large ovals of potatoes that looked similar to what Ruffles SHOULD look like. Amazing.
We ordered burgers all around, I went for the Bueche Burger, 10oz of fresh mixed burger with grilled onions, mushrooms, swiss and bacon. My buddy John Roy went for the cheeseburger, adding on bacon and grilled onions in wise move, and the Wife went with the standard cheeseburger (which is not standard by any means).
We sat around and enjoyed the small talk for a bit and before long out came the burgers. As warned, mine was LARGE. Mounds of bacon, mushroom and onions covered the burger. Roy’s burger provided the best picture opportunity however, so I took a shot of it and as you can see, this is pure burger heaven. The cheese was oozing, the bun glistened with the good stuff (otherwise known as grease), and the burger was gleaming with its juices.
The burgers didn’t rely on looks alone though… biting into one was one of the more enjoyable food experiences I’ve had in a while. The ground meat was fresh and hand formed into a large patty, the bacon cooked perfectly…seriously, I could go on for quite a while.
I only made it halfway through my Boueche burger, and the wife got almost as far into her own. Somehow, Roy managed to polish off his whole burger within three minutes of this picture being taken.
Next time you’re in need of some good times, a cold Corona, a good ol’ greasy burger, or the perfect combination of all three, get yourself to Parrot’s!

Oh man, that place looks absolutely mouth-watering! Next time the wife and I go that way we WILL stop there even if we just ate. Places like this are good enough to have a vegetarian eating cow tongue with ketchup after a hefty plate of heavenly burger!

My friend is from Franklin and always wants us to come and visit to check out the people and food. I wonder if she knows about Parrot’s, I will have to ask her. It looks really good and we can’t resist a yummy burger. With Hawaiian shirts and Jimmy Buffet music, it’s definitely a place to check out when I finally make the trip to Louisiana.

That is one delicious looking burger. I have an ex husband in Franklin who used to take me here back in the day. I think that is the only thing I miss about my husband – those were some of the best burgers I have ever eaten to date. You’ve captured its beauty perfectly in those photos.
