You have to love a place that gives you a discount if you have the guts to mention your receding hairline. No really, I subscribe to Roberto’s newsletter and what popped into my inbox? This thing:

The Bald Tuesday Flyer
Robertos River Road Restaurant has long been a favorite of mine. A couple miles down River Road from Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge sits one of the coolest little places with some great eats and cheap drinks. It’s a renovated country grocery store serving up some of the best food within 250 yards of the Mississippi River.
Start with the River Road shrimp, which are served with a brandy butter somewhat akin to a sauce you would use for BBQ. Then pack the prawns into a bread “boule” and there you go. After devouring the shrimp, you devour the bread bowl (which has had a cup of brandy butter soaking into since the dish was placed on your table). If you thought dipping chunks of French bread into your BBQ shrimp sauce is good, you will love this! The shrimp are well cooked, easy to peel, and very tasty.
Next try out their cream of brie with crab soup. Thick, rich and just how you would imagine it tasting. Need you say more about a soup made of butter, heavy cream, and melted cheese?
As for entrees, I would suggest anything they have on special that night. We’ve had the pork tenderloin, fresh fish, chicken dishes, etc. People also go crazy about their Fish en Papillote: fresh fish cooked in a parchment paper pouch along with lemon, butter, herbs, and crabmeat.
Really, I’ve never had a bad dish at Roberto’s, and if you think like Coon regarding prices, neither the dishes nor the wine list will break the bank (especially since the next time we go I’m saying I want my 10% off for sporting “The Jack!”) Anyone picked up “The Telly” discount yet and will admit to it?
Notes: Closed on Mondays and 40% off wine on Tuesday and Wednesday nights!

Tommy! I must thank you for posting this–I have lived in Baton Rouge off and on for over ten years and have never heard of this place. My husband wanted us to go out to eat tonight with his family and I suggested Roberto’s based on your blog–we were not disappointed! We loved it! If I hadn’t had so many glasses of wine, I would offer to write a guest blog on the wonderful meal we had. From appetizers to dessert, everything was delicious. We will definitely go back. Thanks again for the recommendation.

I’ve been a long time fan of Roberto’s as well. He was a customer of my former employer and I never had a bad meal there. It’s just as great for lunch as it is for dinner. If it’s still on the menu, they serve a “sensation” salad which is worth the drive by itself. And the bread pudding is some of the best I’ve ever had. I used to joke that I didn’t even care what I got as an entree as long as I had the salad and bread pudding!
