You want a real cheeseburger… get yourself to Parrot’s on False River!

burger1 150x150 You want a real cheeseburger... get yourself to Parrots on False River!Parrot’s on False River is a Parrothead’s dream.  Dark neighborhood bar with great tunes routinely interspersed with Jimmy Buffett songs, Hawaiian shirts, knick knacks pegged everywhere, friendly people, overlooking the water, great burgers, fresh cut fries and chips… I could go on and on.

Bought seven years ago by the one of the nicest couples you’ll ever meet, Parrot’s in Jarreau is a short distance from Baton Rouge on the southeast side of False River.  You can drive there of course, but the best way is to pull up in a boat and tie off at their dock.

The place is one of the best around for drinks amongst old friends, new friends, and people that you’ve never met before but are soon to be counted as friends.  While I had been there before, I had never had the chance to eat here.  On a recent trip though, the Wife and I accompanied a friend out to False River and I was determined to eat one of these famous burgers.

Maison Lacour’s “Baton Rouge Night”

I don’t know how I went all those years living in Baton Rouge without catching a whiff of this, but Maison Lacour puts on an event entitled “Baton Rouge Night” several times during the course of the year.  As stated on their website:

Baton Rouge Night is a special charitable event started in 1987. The seven course menu starts with a Kir Royal. Different wines are poured at three points during the meal. The meal is priced at $75.00 per person with all of the proceeds going to a local charity. Maison Lacour provides for all of the costs incurred. The waiters usually donate part of their tips to the charity. More then $335,000 has been raised for local charities.

$75.00 per person for seven courses of classic French cuisine, champagne, and three pourings of wine… for charity! The next two events are sponsoring the McMains Children’s Development Center on September 13 and CASA on October 25 and we hope to be there for one of them!

You can book your reservation by calling the restaurant at 225-275-3755.

A suggestion for the guy and his dog that sell chicken fingers

If you’ve been following us for a while (i.e. all two months of our existence), you know that we’ve already unveiled what we think is “the secret” to Cane’s sauce.   It’s been a while since I’ve had the guilty pleasure of eating at one of these fine establishments, but on a late night excursion some time ago, a friend of mine “dragged” the Wife and I through the drive-thru.

A couple of minutes later, we had arrived back at his place where we also came across some bacon (his fiancee is renowned for her skill cooking the swinish slices).   It was a no brainer… seconds later I had what was one of the most divine late night delicacies I have ever come across.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so maybe this picture will pop back into your brain when you wake up this weekend after a long day of having a bit too much fun at Jazzfest or Festival International.

In the meanwhile I hope Mr. Graves and his crew take a long hard look at this photo and realize it IS (or in my view should be) the next big thing.

Let the drooling begin…

Seriously, if was going to an LSU game one day and the sign at the College Drive location said “Get a Cajun Foodie TODAY!” promoting this combination, I just might have re-enroll at LSU for another degree.  Hello post-doctorate student 15!

George’s- The Original in Baton Rouge

georges1 Georges The Original in Baton RougeGeorge’s Restaurant in Baton Rouge is a one-of-a-kind that has spawned several other locations all declaring their own uniqueness. A bastion of killer food in a dark (and once very smoky) atmosphere, George’s has been dishing it out under the Perkins Overpass for quite a while but hasn’t skipped a beat.  As their website proclaims: Read the rest of this entry »

Anthony’s Italian Deli in Baton Rouge

I haven’t been to Anthony’s Italian Deli since college, but decided to revisit and ended up eating there twice last week. Anthony’s is located in a shabby strip-mall on Florida Boulevard, near Sharp Road. The place is tiny, with only a few tables, but it puts out some big eats.

The menu is short, with several different sandwiches, but they also have daily specials. Anthony’s specialty is their New Orleans Style Muffoletta, and with good reason: it’s spectacular. The combination of mortadella, ham, genoa salami, cappicola, provolone cheese and Anthony’s own olive dressing beats any muffaletta I’ve ever tasted and the bread (so important!) is perfect–it doesn’t overpower the meats and cheese, and the texture is not overly soft or hard. Anthony’s presses their sandwiches, providing a nice crispness and flavor. Read the rest of this entry »

Bergeron’s in Port Allen for smoked meats and pulled pork!

Bergerons in Port Allen for smoked meats and pulled pork!Bergeron’s Boudin and Cajun Meats in Port Allen is just across the Mississippi River from downtown Baton Rouge and LSU. What was once a little shack along Hwy. 415 now is a little shack with a big dining hall next to it, but I wouldn’t know what the inside of the new building looks like as the original shack has everything I need and more. Smoked sausages, boudin and freshly fried tasty treats like boudin balls and meat pies await you inside, and if you’re lucky, they might just have a stack of their aluminum foil wrapped pulled pork sandwiches sitting on the counter beckoning to you. The roast beef poboy “smear” at Pastime in Baton Rouge

p 640 480 bbf534b6 9d18 4998 9437 835fd35eada8 150x150 The roast beef poboy smear at Pastime in Baton RougeAaahhh Pastime. The place is a veritable Baton Rouge and LSU institution. Tucked in a small corner underneath the Mississippi River bridge, the Pastime Restaurant and Lounge has served up great food for years. There are several methods by which you could tell you were in the Pastime even in your eyes were closed:

1. you have to write your order on little pieces of paper waiting on the counter,
2. you get your food when your name is called loudly but barely intelligibly over a PA system,
3. you move the plate on which your roast beef poboy sits and you feel the trail otherwise known as “the smear.”

The “Double Bypass” at Morel’s

 The Double Bypass at Morels

Oftentimes, drinking a fine red wine leaves little room for anything but enjoying the moment…that is, until many moments later you are feeling the effects of said wine.  Such times call for one kind of food and you know what I’m talking about, the kind like the concoction my friend affectionately calls “The Double Bypass.”
