Every time I pass through (and even a few times when I was just near) Lake Charles I try to stop by Darrell’s, home of the Darrell’s Special. Calling the Darrell’s Special just a po-boy would be like calling the Grand Canyon just a drainage ditch.
The specifics seem simple enough: po-boy bread with ham, turkey, roast beef, gravy, cheddar, Swiss & provolone cheeses, mustard, lettuce, and jalapeno mayo. Nothing to write home about, right? WRONG!!!
Once these items are combined in this side-of-the-road bar & grill, something magical happens; some sort of culinary chemical reaction. I can’t tell you how, but just that it does…
The bread becomes soaked with the gravy and it all just melds together into one big mess of goodness and the jalapeno mayo just puts this handheld masterpiece over the top
I recommend stopping by and picking one up with chips and a cold drink next time you’re in (or around) Lake Chuck and you won’t be disappointed. And while they do sell half sizes, I strongly recommend getting the full size and eating the rest later. Given time to come together, some say it’s even better the second time around.
I’m pretty sure there are other things on their menu at Darrell’s, but I don’t know why…

Yummm!! Sounds very similar to the D&C Special from Danny & Clyde’s!! Ham, turkey, roast beef, and GRAVY! Who would’ve thought?! Not sure though, if the D&C has jalapeno mayo? MMM…”the messier, the better” is right! I think I know what’s for supper tonight! Thanks, Coon!

Try the Surf and Turf…it used to be an off menu “secret” of the locals, but they finally put it on the menu, it’s roast beef with all that great gravy, and sautee’d shrimp. The beef gravy and buttery sautee sauce from the shrimp mix together with the jalepeno mayo and it is unbelievable, even better than the darrells special

I actually work at darrells as a bartender, I’ve been there four years to get thru school and guess what? I can still eat there. Everyone loves the darrells special but trust me there are other great sandwiches, we have sauteed shrimp, hot ham and cheese, smoked turkey, juicy toast beef, BBQ brisket which is smoke by Darrell himself for 12 hours, BBQ sausage, and a surf and turf which is roast beef and sauteed shrimp. We also have what we call a cheesebread- we melt the American Swiss and provolone cheese onto the poboy bread and cut it into small slices to be dipped into the homemade roast beef gravy or BBQ sauce. For kids we have pb&j and grilled cheese. And not just because I work there we really do have a great wait staff, in fact Darrell himself frequently shows up on weekdays to help wait on tables and make sure customers get exactly what they should. I work mostly nights so come in and ask for mike, we’ll take care of you
