Most of Kolache’s in Baton Rouge are more like a Pig-in-a Blanket which is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LIKE A KOLACHE!!!!

Kolache is not biscuit or donut dough wrapped aroun a peice of sausage. It’s actually a bread roll with the fill stuff in and baked.

Calling a pig-in-a-blanket a Kolache is an insult to the real thing. I finally moved back to Louisiana after living in Houston for 9 years. Kolaches became the best breakfast food around! Thank you Czech immingrants to Texas many many years ago.

P.S. The Czech immigrants in Texas also invented Chicken Fried Steak which is based in the much smaller Weinerschnitzel and/or Jagerschnitzel.

Thee Heavenly Donuts in Baton Rouge has started doing Kolaches. They have ham and cheese, smoked sausage and cheddar, smoked sausage and jalapeno, and a chicken fajita. Pretty good stuff. No stuffed weiners like some of the other places around here have.

As the owner of Donuts Galore in Opelousas, I Thank you for the generous comments. We have been doing some different kollaches and have had great success with them. The various kollaches include Chicken Fajita, Boudin, Pulled Pork to name a few. We are in the process of making a Beef Brisket kollache. I’ll let you know the outcome. Twenty years ago, I moved to Houston and had never heard of a kolache. Thanks to me being in the purchasing field where vendors love to supply their customers with such delicacies, I am now two sizes larger trying to make up for lost time. Morning’s Kolaches are the best along with those huge cinnamon rolls. If you’re in for a real treat, stop at Prasek’s on 59 South between Sugar Land and Victoria. The ‘piglet kolaches’ melt in your mouth.

Mikey’s Donuts in Opelousas, LA is so much better then Donuts Galore. You must try them asap! Its the best breakfast food after a long night of partying!
