Cafe Breen in OpelousasCafe Breen is tucked away in the back of a massive antique store in a strip mall, and its location belies it’s stature as one of the best places to grab a bite to eat in Opelousas.

Outside the world of fried food, heavy sauces, and fatty sausages for which Opelousas is famous (and Lord knows I love it all), there is the occasional time when I decide I should maybe be putting something a little different down the ol’ gullet.

On one of those fleeting moments, I walked into Cafe Breen, and the grilled chicken salad that was presented to me was quite tasty. This post is not about salads however, as I know you’re thinking  “dude that picture is a wrap stuffed with meat up there.”

The latest time around I went with the 3 course daily special. That day, it kicked off with the cafe’s excellent shrimp and corn bisque. Hearty, thick and wholly delicious, I can honestly say that this is one of a select few soups I would be willing to eat as a meal.

Next up, a wrap stuffed with a combination somewhat akin to a Cuban Sandwich. Filling, tasty, and with enough greens to make me feel somewhat healthy, it hit the spot.

They saved the best for last however, (was this supposed to be a post about something healthy?) with a nice dolloped portion of peach cobbler arriving on an appetizer plate. I am a HUGE fan of cobblers, buckles, fruit pies, etc. If the Wife let me, I would call my first child Hubig.

Around Opelousas, cobblers are made with an addictive topping that tastes like yellow cake (one of my favorites) straight from the boxed mix. Cafe Breen in OpelousasThe best of the lot crisp a thin layer of sugar on top, and this was one of the best. While it may not have fit into the whole “this was a healthy lunch” theme, it was well worth it.

Cafe Breen is moving into the spot once occupied by Le Zinc in downtown Opelousas and will be open for breakfast and lunch.  Hopefully, they’ll go big and open up for dinner service, because I for one will be outside the doors!
